Navy Pier stretches nearly miles out into Lake Michigan and offers the best skyline photograph in all of Chicago — looking west from the far end, downtown rises dramatically behind the harbor. You have a full hour here with two options:

A quick but unmissable stop. The tip of the Adler Planetarium peninsula gives the single most unobstructed view of the Chicago skyline anywhere in the city — the full downtown profile reflected in Lake Michigan, with no buildings or structures in the foreground. This is the shot you came for.

Best photo tips: Face west for the full skyline. The John Hancock, Willis Tower, and Tribune Tower all align perfectly from this vantage. The van is parked close — it's a 5-minute walk to the viewpoint and back.

One of the world's most visited aquariums, Shedd houses over 32,000 animals across six distinct habitats. The centerpiece is the 90,000-gallon Caribbean Reef in the central rotunda. The Oceanarium features beluga whales and dolphins against a floor-to-ceiling glass wall aligned with Lake Michigan on the horizon — an unforgettable visual.

One of the largest natural history museums in the world, home to SUE — the most complete T. rex skeleton ever found, 40 feet long with 90% of original bones. Beyond SUE: halls of ancient Egypt with genuine mummies, the Hall of Gems, and stunning Pacific and Native American art collections.
